There is some really interesting clarification in this piece on the merits of thinking in terms of relative versus absolute fitness. In some ways this is just DSW trotting out his usual arguments for the equivalence of different mechanisms for the evolution of cooperation (kin selection = group selection = inclusive fitness). But there’s an important critique here of Whitfield’s real confusion between proximate and ultimate causation.
