Do our students only respond to high-stakes testing?

I do give Final Exams, but they are relatively low stakes (~30% of students’ grades).
Still, I can relate to this piece (a lot!). Increasingly students seem to think that the only thing that matters is the test. In my classes, I actually get a lot of students complaining that anything except their exams are counted towards their final grade! I also wish that my students could appreciate my classes for the learning that goes on and not treat them so much as a set of obligatory hurdles that need to be jumped for credit.
